Competition Ratio

0.77 in 2017 (from UKFPO's 2018 Applicant's Handbook).
0.90 in 2018 (from UKFPO's 2019 Applicant's Handbook).

NOTE: Remember that these numbers fluctuate from year to year, so looking at the statistics from just one year can be misleading.

The Application Process

Appointment to F2 Programmes

Successful applicants are allocated to the same trust for both F1 and F2.  The exact programme of rotations in F2 will be determined via a separate process during F1; this is managed on a trust-by-trust basis and therefore the system varies between different trusts.

Linked Applications

Every foundation school honours linked applications so that linked applicants are allocated to the same foundation school.  Other (often the larger schools) will honour them further, ensuring applicants are allocated programmes within a certain distance of each other.  Northern Foundation School does not honour linked applications at a programme level.

Usually the two years are organised into six rotations of 4 months; occasionally in F2 they are organised into one six month rotation, one four month rotation, and one two month rotation.
Training Options

Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training may be undertaken providing eligibility criteria are met.

Training overseas is not possible for foundation trainees, with the exception of an affiliation with Malta Foundation School.
