NOTE: Remember that these numbers fluctuate from year to year, so looking at the statistics from just one year can be misleading.

The Application Process
Appointment to F2 Programmes
If you are allocated to a foundation school within the West Midlands Deanery, such as Hereford & Worcestershire Foundation School, you will have been allocated to an F1 programme only.   There is a second independent allocation process for your F2 programme during F1 year.  It is important to note that trainees could be placed anywhere within the West Midlands Deanery for F2 - trainees do not necessarily remain within the same foundation school.

The system is termed F2AP: trainees receive a score based on their progression in the first part of their F1 year.  This is determined using their e-portfolio outcome standards, and a global assessment from their trainer/educational supervisor for F1.  Allocations are also based on trainees' preferences.

You can find more information about allocations to F2 on the F2 Applications Process page.
Linked Applications
Every foundation school honours linked applications so that linked applicants are allocated to the same foundation school.  Others will honour them further, ensuring applicants are allocated programmes within a certain distance of each other.  Hereford & Worcestershire Foundation School does not honour linked applications at a programme level.

The Programme
Posts Available
You can find the programmes available to 2014 applicants here. There are also documents describing some of the individual placements in F1 and F2, detailing the main aspects of each job; they can be downloaded from the sidebar on Hereford & Worcestershire Foundation School's homepage.  F1 programmes are organised into three rotations, each lasting 4 months.
Training Options
Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training may be undertaken providing eligibility criteria are met.  Hereford & Worcestershire Foundation School do not support training abroad during the Foundation Programme.

Academic Foundation Posts
For academic foundation programme applications in this region, there is only one Unit of Application - West Midlands.  This means that if you would like to apply for an academic foundation programme in Hereford & Worcestershire Foundation School, you would apply to the West Midlands Unit of Application, which incorporates five foundation schools - Birmingham, Black Country/Shropshire, Hereford & Worcester, Staffordshire and Coventry & Warwickshire.

You can download 'Academic Foundation Job Descriptions' from their main Academic Foundation Programme page.  Rotations are 3 x 4 months, and there is direct progression to F2 which contains a 4-month dedicated academic placement.

The specialties offered in the academic programmes include Endocrinology and Diabetes, Renal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Acute Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Public Health, Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, General Practice, and Rheumatology.  Some of the F2 posts provide the opportunity to be involved in Medical Education; however if this is your specific interest it may be best to contact the deanery directly to enquire about Medical Education as a component of an academic post.

GMC Quality Assurance and National Training Survey
The National Training Survey is conducted annually by the GMC.  It aims to examine the quality of postgraduate education and training by collecting anonymous feedback from trainees about their posts.

This year, the GMC have launched an online version: the National Training Survey reporting tool.  There is a lot of information available on this tool, but you could get started with "Foundation school by foundation scheme".   This tool displays feedback from trainees about their rotations (e.g. anaesthetics, general surgery) at every foundation school.  You can just browse the results, or by using the filter tool, you can make a couple of useful comparisons:

  • You can compare the same rotation at different foundation schools, e.g. general medicine at Hereford & Worcestershire vs. Staffordshire Foundation School.
  • You can compare different rotations at the same foundation school, e.g. general medicine vs. general surgery at Hereford & Worcestershire Foundation School.
